“Intel’s hardware mitigations against these types of attacks have held their ground for almost 6 years. In our work, we demonstrate how these mitigations can be broken due to a race condition in Intel CPUs.”

ETH Zurich found a race condition that brings Spectre back on every Intel CPU since the 9th generation. It leaks memory at 5.6 KB per second on a fully patched system. The microcode fix costs up to 2.7% performance and the software fix up to 8.3%. Users pay for Intel’s bug.
