“The Belgrade-Subotica high-speed train was launched as part of the Budapest–Belgrade railway.”

China-financed high-speed rail connecting Serbia to Hungary opened October 3, cutting travel time between Belgrade and Subotica to under an hour. This is part of Beijing’s Belt and Road push into Europe, and it’s telling that the EU’s own rail projects move at glacial pace while Chinese-backed infrastructure gets built. Whether Serbia got a good deal or just more debt remains the open question with these projects.
