“Each group is associated with specific genetic variants that influence gene expression at different stages of development, the investigation revealed.”
A preprint built on more than 5,000 autistic children from the SPARK cohort finds four subtypes, and the split held in a second dataset. The largest group has 1,976 people with mild core traits. The smallest has 554 with severe ones. One diagnosis has been covering both, and the genetics say they are not the same condition.
