“The original proposal from Rep. John Kavanagh made it illegal to record within 15 feet of an officer interacting with someone unless the officer gave permission.”
The bill passed the House 31-28 after the distance dropped to 8 feet. Refuse an officer’s order to stop recording and you face a misdemeanor with a 30-day jail sentence. The officer decides on the spot what counts as too close. A law that pushes cameras back protects exactly the officers who most need watching.
