Volunteers archived over 1.2 billion goo.gl links before Google killed the service on August 25, 2025. These short URLs are embedded in academic papers, legal documents, and countless web pages. Google could have kept the redirect service running forever at trivial cost. Instead, they killed it and left volunteers to save a piece of web history that a trillion-dollar company decided was not worth maintaining.
