“Today more than 40 percent of all data retrieved by celestial explorers, including Voyagers, New Horizons, and the Mars Curiosity rover, comes through DSS-43.”
DSS-43 near Canberra came online in December 1972 for Apollo 17 and got its 70-meter dish in 1987. Voyager 2 has been below the plane of the planets since 1989, so no Northern Hemisphere antenna can see it. Its 23-watt radio arrives 20 billion times weaker than what runs a digital watch, and a round trip took about 37 hours in 2020. NASA’s link to a probe in interstellar space depends on one dish in Australia.
