DeepSeek built a competitive model and the US AI industry’s response has been to claim the data was stolen. Sixteen million queries through fake accounts is a real terms-of-service violation. It’s also a sign that training on Claude outputs is apparently a viable shortcut. The security didn’t hold and the terms didn’t stop anyone.
