“On Friday, genetic testing company 23andMe announced that hackers accessed the personal data of 0.1% of customers, or about 14,000 individuals.”
Fourteen thousand turned into 6.9 million, roughly half of 23andMe’s 14 million customers. The company led with the small number and blamed customers for reusing passwords. DNA Relatives is 23andMe’s own feature, and it turned each cracked account into a window on every linked relative. The hacker was already selling records of Ashkenazi Jewish and Chinese users at $1 to $10 each.
